The Importance of Specialty Excipients in veterinary formulations

We support veterinary health innovation with specialty excipients, vaccine adjuvants, and veterinary nutraceuticals for livestock and companion animals.

Our portfolio helps improve stability, delivery, effectiveness, and product quality across veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and pet nutrition. Technical, regulatory, and quality expertise helps formulators build safer products that work well and stay reliable in the market.

Species we serve in the veterinary market

We work with animal health companies and their formulation teams to make safer, more efficient, highly specialised products.

These products are used across many veterinary dosage forms for two main animal groups: livestock and companion animals. We help solve the daily problems that formulators, vets, and livestock producers face.

Veterinary excipients for livestock

Our livestock range supports cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, and fish. These products help prevent and treat issues that affect animal health and the cost-effective production of high-quality protein.

Global animal health companies use our range to develop:

  • Vaccines to prevent disease or trigger an immune response
  • Anti-infectives to prevent, treat, or slow infection
  • Products that help prevent or remove external and internal parasites
  • Medicated feed additives that improve feed quality and nutrition
  • Other medicines for pain, sedation, and wound care

Veterinary excipients for companion animals

Our companion animal range supports dogs, cats, and horses. These products help manage pain, prevent disease, and extend quality of life. They also help pet owners give better care to their animals.

This range also helps develop skin care products for specific skin or coat concerns in companion animals.

Veterinary pharmaceuticals

We offer quality excipients to support anti-infectives, products that help prevent or remove parasites, skin care products, medicated feed additives, and other veterinary medicines.

Our pharmaceutical excipients help dissolve, stabilise, and deliver even the most challenging APIs. Our Super Refined™ excipients meet and exceed standard pharmacopeia requirements to provide strong performance, plus product quality, consistency, and reliability.

Injectable veterinary excipients

Stable drug formulations are one of the main challenges for pharma teams. At Croda, we develop high-quality, very pure excipients to help you formulate with ease, cut failed batches, and bring products to market faster.

We created our Super Refined excipients to keep your formulations stable, effective, and consistent.

Oral veterinary excipients

Controlled-release oral dosage forms for companion animals are a challenge because of gut function and eating habits.

We have built in-house know-how in recent years. It helps us better understand how high-purity excipients and SEDDS and SMEDDS formulations affect oral absorption in vitro.

Topical veterinary excipients

Topical spot-on formulations have become more popular as a simple dosing option for companion animals.

Our Super Refined range can help with dissolving and stabilising sparingly soluble actives, and can also improve delivery through the skin with permeation enhancers. These benefits add value for the next generation of spot-on products.

With penetration studies, we can develop tailored and effective pour-on formulations that improve new drug performance and increase returns from existing products.

Auricular, nasal and ophthalmic veterinary excipients

Developing a drug for the ophthalmic, auricular, and nasal routes requires a focus on key factors such as drug stability and endotoxin levels.

High-purity excipients can help stabilise, dissolve, and deliver APIs through these routes. Our portfolio includes:

  • Solvents
  • Emulsifiers
  • Stability enhancers.

Veterinary vaccines

Veterinary vaccines have played a major role in protecting animal health and public health. They reduce animal suffering, support efficient food animal production, and lower the need for antibiotics in food and companion animals.

A successful animal vaccine is shaped by immune factors such as antigen type, plus formulation and delivery.

For each vaccine, the choice of adjuvant depends on several criteria, including the animal species.

Innovative and GMP adjuvants for veterinary formulations

Leveraging over 80 years of expertise in vaccine adjuvants, we are committed to manufacturing and supplying the GMP adjuvants needed today and developing the novel adjuvants of tomorrow. Our industry-leading Quil- A™ is widely recognised in the vaccine industry as well as Alhydrogel™, and Adju-Phos™. New adjuvants are also in development, continuing our offer for veterinary vaccines.

Choosing a suitable veterinary vaccine adjuvant

Vaccine adjuvants are a mixed group of compounds with one main job: to boost immune responses.

To drive the right immune response, adjuvant selection for a veterinary vaccine is based on:

  • Animal species
  • Disease
  • Type of antigen
  • Type of immune response
  • Desired timing of the immune response.

Research and GMP lipids for veterinary vaccines

Lipid Nanoparticles (LNPs) have been shown to be effective at delivering mRNA vaccines.

Traditionally, LNP systems include four lipid components: Cationic lipid, PEG lipid, structural/neutral lipid, and cholesterol. The ionizable cationic lipid sequesters the genetic material through a charge interaction and releases the material following a pH change in the endosome. The PEG lipid component forms the exterior shell to protect the LNP and decreases particle aggregation. The structural/neutral lipid stabilises the LNP and can prevent premature breakdown.

Finally, cholesterol acts as a stability enhancer and assists in the transfection of RNA.

Veterinary nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals are dietary supplements intended to improve the animals’ health, welfare, and productivity. The nutritional needs of animals differ depending on species, size, age, breed, and purpose. We develop a wide range of solutions for the specific nutritional requirements of companion animals such as dogs and cats and other pets.

Our broad portfolio also comprises ingredients that can solubilise vitamins A, E, D, and omega-3 essential fatty acids for pet food products. The aim of our solutions is always to provide your animals with what they need and improve the overall effectiveness of our customers’ businesses.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to provide many benefits in both humans and animals.

For cats and dogs, EPA and DHA play an important role in many body functions.

Most pets eat highly processed foods and often lack a balanced ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, so these fats must be added to their diets.

The key Omega-3 components are EPA and DHA, which have proven benefits across several health areas.

Our Incromega™ range of fish oil concentrates includes high-EPA and high-DHA oils, helping our customers' brands focus on these health areas.

Our omega-3 for dogs and cats ingredients are used to support:

  • Heart
  • Kidney
  • Eyes
  • Skin and coat
  • Brain
  • Joints
  • Cell formation
  • Healthy aging
  • Immune function
  • Wellbeing.

The choice depends on the animal species, disease, type of antigen, the immune response needed, and the timing of that response. These criteria help ensure the adjuvant supports the most suitable immune response for the vaccine.

Vaccine adjuvants are a highly heterogenous collection of compounds that share one functional characteristic: the ability to enhance immune responses.

Development of a commercially successful animal vaccine is not only influenced by various immunological factors, such as type of antigen but also by formulation and delivery aspects. For each vaccine, the choice of vaccine adjuvant is based upon several criteria, including the animal species.

Vaccine adjuvants are a highly heterogenous collection of compounds that share one functional characteristic: the ability to enhance immune responses.

To stimulate the most appropriate immune responses, the adjuvant selection for a veterinary vaccine is based on below criteria:

  • Animal species
  • Disease
  • Type of antigen
  • Type of immune response
  • Desired kinetics of the immune response.

EPA and DHA are key omega-3 fatty acids that support many body functions in cats and dogs.
