What is Polawax™ NF Pharma Emulsifying Wax?
PolawaxTM NF Pharma is a self-emulsifying, non-ionic wax prepared from cetostearyl alcohol containing polysorbate 60 (Croda International Plc 2024, 2025). This wax can be used to formulate emulsions which are stable in the presence of heat and metal ions (Croda International Plc 2022). It can form these oil-in-water emulsions without the need for anionic surfactants, alkalis, sulphated fatty alcohols or gums (Croda International Plc 2024). Ideal for topical formulation systems, PolawaxTM NF Pharma can be used when an anionic emulsifier is not required, or contraindicated, to deliver active pharmaceutical compounds (APIs) over a wide pH range. It is suitable for use in formulations which need to be stable at high temperatures and require a long shelf life - for example, alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids in facial treatments (Croda International Plc 2024). This wax works by producing liquid crystal emulsions that promote controlled ‘time release’ hydration with excellent smooth texture and stability (Croda International Plc 2022).PolawaxTM NF Pharma is soluble in isopropyl alcohol, dispersible in water and propylene glycol, and insoluble in oils (Croda International Plc 2024).
PolawaxTM NF Pharma Key Characteristics and Applications
PolawaxTM NF Pharma is a safe emulsifying wax base to develop formulations for topical administration of pharmaceutical APIs. Its controlled ‘time release’ mechanism allows for the development of ointments and creams that release APIs efficiently while maintaining a pleasing texture (Croda International Plc 2022). It also facilitates the homogenous distribution of the API (Croda International Plc 2024).
It can be used across a broad range of dermatological applications, including anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic formulations (Croda International Plc 2024).
